Sunday 9th November 2008 - 7pm
Rich Hall, the grouchy, deadpan, comic genius quit his job as a hurricane namer for the United States Meteorological Service eighteen years ago and has never looked back. Since then he has won an Emmy for writing on The David Letterman Show, won the Perrier Award (the comedy equivalent to a Oscar) with his excellent character Otis Lee Crenshaw, and won the Edinburgh Critics Award, Twice! Looking like a Pearl Jam roadie, Rich is a master of absurdist irony while eschewing the human condition. He particularly likes to lay it on Americans and life across the Pond at every opportunity. The world is a donkey ride to hell and Rich is your tour guide. Rich is well known in the States for his numerous appearances on The Letterman Show and Saturday Night Live. In the UK, Rich has appeared on Have I Got News For You, Jack Dee's Sunday Service, host of The Jack Docherty Show and US reporter for The 11 O'Clock Show. (back to top)

Monday 9th November 2008 - 7pm
As in great theatre, most get ruined by heartbreak or choose suicide rather than exist without the passion they can never have. Okkervil River plays loose and fast with literary concepts. The quartet's 'Black Sheep Boy' adopts its character from the Tim Hardin song and deposits him into weeping folk-rock fables about cursed fates, scarred emotions and marooned lives. (back to top)

Monday 10th November 2008 - 7pm
The Feeling, who took their name from a small bar in Paris whose name they thought fitting for a band, but not for a bar, is a five-piece band from Sussex and London. With their guitar-based "soft rock", they have been compared to a range of acts including Supertramp, 10cc, Electric Light Orchestra, Andrew Gold and Elton John. Their singles include "Sewn", which reached #7 on the UK Singles Chart, followed by the #10 hit "Fill My Little World" in May 2006 and "Never Be Lonely" in August 2006. In early 2007, the band was also announced the most played band of 2006 on UK radio. (back to top)

Tuesday 11th November 2008 - 7pm
After the break-up of Creed, three of its members (Mark Tremonti, Scott Phillips and Brian Marshall) return with this new band. They are augmented by singer Myles Kennedy, whose awesome vocal ability blends perfectly with the instrumental talents of the rest of the group. Whilst keeping an open mind about music, the four band members undoubtedly play to their strengths, delivering rock songs that are exciting and melodic in equal measure. (back to top)

Illegal Eagles at the Wulfrun Hall, Wolverhampton
ILLEGAL EAGLES (Wulfrun Hall)

Tuesday 11th November 2008 - 7.30pm
During the summer of 1996, Phil Aldridge found himself feverishly pacing the floor of his lounge, unable to believe that the concert he had seen the night before was part of the last tour The Eagles would ever do. Then, slowly but surely, light began to filter through the darkness as his idea of forming a new band began to take shape, selfish maybe, but at least his idea would be the ideal way for him to hear his favourite Eagles songs played over and over again!
After several months of ideas, rehearsals, phone calls, hard work and more rehearsals at last Phil's brainchild came to fruition with accurate harmonies and meticulously crafted instrumentals, even The Eagles own style of rapport between band and audience had been carefully honed to perfection…….The Illegal Eagles were born! Wednesday 12th November 2008 - 7pm
A previous alter ego, Jilted John, had a one-hit-wonder in 1978 with an eponymous comedy punk single sporting that most memorable of choruses: "Gordon Is A Moron". In recent times the irresistible character of John Shuttleworth, an aspiring singer/songwriter in his late 50s from Sheffield with a quiet manner and slightly nerdish tendencies, has built up a huge worldwide fanbase. Don't miss the songs and stories of Sheffield's funniest man, ex-security guard and the King of the Yamaha Organ. (back to top)

Even as a child Tony knew he was different from other children. From an early age he was aware of seeing people before him that others could not see. It was common for him to hear his name being called by someone unseen, and also common for him to be aware of events before they actually happened. To him, all this was perfectly normal. The opening day of the tournament sees all 32 players in action in their first of three group games. Taylor and Mardle have met in three major finals in the past, and 13-time World Champion Taylor said: "It will be a cracking way to start the competition. Wayne and I always enjoy playing each other and we've had some great battles over the years. It's only the best of nine legs so it will be very exciting." Elsewhere in Group E, Lloyd will meet the first of the two final qualifiers from the PDC Order of Merit - currently Ronnie Baxter - while former Lakeside Champion Jelle Klaasen kicks off the tournament at midday against Shaun Greatbatch in Group D. Nouvelle Vague at the Wulfrun Hall, Wolverhampton
NOUVELLE VAGUE (Wulfrun Hall)

Tuesday 25th November 2008 - 7pm

Their name is a play on words referring simultaneously to their "Frenchness" and "artiness", the '60s new wave of cult French cinema, the source of their songs, all covers of punk rock, post-punk, and New Wave songs, and their use of '60s Bossa nova-style arrangements, bossa nova meaning "new wave" or "new beat" in Portuguese. On their first album, Nouvelle Vague, the group resurrected classics from the New Wave music era, and reinterpreted them in a bossa nova style. The songs were stripped back to acoustic arrangements with lithe shaker rhythms achieved by gathering a parade of chanteuses from all over the world, six French, one Brazilian and one New Yorker, to cover bands including XTC, Modern English, The Clash, Joy Division and The Undertones. The various female singers on Nouvelle Vague only performed songs they had never heard before, to ensure that each cover would have a unique quality. Nouvelle Vague in concert at Le Cargö.Their second album, Bande à Part, includes versions of "Ever Fallen in Love (With Someone You Shouldn't've)" by Buzzcocks, "Blue Monday" by New Order, "The Killing Moon" by Echo and the Bunnymen and "Heart of Glass" by Blondie. Members, former members and contributors include many French artists who are now very well known on their own and considered as part of what is now called the "Renouveau de la chanson française" (the "Renewal of French chanson"): Anaïs Croze, Camille Dalmais, Phoebe Killdeer, Mélanie Pain and Marina Céleste. Thunder at the Civic Hall, Wolverhampton
THUNDER (Civic Hall)

Thursday 27th November 2008 - 7pm
Once described, by themselves, as being as "the biggest rock'n'roll band you've never heard of", Thunder are one of the great British rock acts. They sound like a cross between Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, The Rolling Stones and Bad Company. They've toured the world extensively since 1989, and released a huge body of records, both studio and live, and they've notched up 18 top 40 UK hits. How? Not with massive Radio and TV support, no far from it, their success has been down to a combination of their reputation as a phenomenal live act, and the fanatical support of their ever growing fanbase. Thunder have toured with acts such as Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, Van Halen, Whitesnake, Status Quo, Deep Purple, Bryan Adams, ZZ Top, Metallica, the list goes on. They've won awards galore, including best Rock Vocalist from Burrn magazine, Japan, and Best Live Rock Act by readers of Kerrang magazine in the UK. (back to top)

Friday 28th & Saturday 29th November 2008 - 7pm
Jimmy Carr is not just a TV star. He’s won awards, released chart-topping DVDs (there’s a new one out this November), written a best-selling book and broken box office records by performing to over 500,000 people in the last three years.
He may be the hardest working man in comedy. But perhaps he wouldn’t have to be if he had a little bit more talent. This show is exactly the same as last year’s except every single word. It’s rude, crude and offensive but those aren’t the only reasons you’ll enjoy it. Not to be missed, unless it’s not your kind of thing

Korpiklaani at the Wulfrun Hall, Wolverhampton
KORPIKLAANI (Wulfrun Hall)

Monday 1st December 2008 - 7pm

While other folk metal bands began with metal before adding folk music, Korpiklaani started with folk music before turning metal. The roots of Korpiklaani can be traced back to a Sami folk music group under the name of Shamaani Duo, an "in house restaurant band" created by Jonne Järvelä in 1993. An album of folk music was released under this name before Järvelä relocated and formed a new band Shaman. The folk metal act Shaman was based on the folk music of Shamaani Duo. Two albums were released in 1999 and 2001 before Shaman changed their name to Korpiklaani. The change in name was accompanied by a change in the music. The traditional yoik vocals and the use of the Sámi language were dropped while the synthesizer was replaced with real folk instruments. Jonne Järvelä credits his work with Finntroll as the catalyst for the shift in emphasis from folk to metal. According to Jonne Järvelä, Korpiklaani's music would be seen as "old peoples music with heavy metal guitars" in Finland. There has been some amount of collaboration between Korpiklaani and Finntroll, as Samu Ruotsalainen of Finntroll provided session drums for their debut album Spirit of the Forest and Järvelä provided the yoiking for the title track of Finntroll's album Jaktens Tid. SHOW OF HANDS (Wulfrun Hall)

Wednesday 3rd December 2008 - 7pm

Peter Gabriel, Johnnie Walker and Bob Harris are all agreed - Show of Hands are one of the great English acoustic bands. An alchemist couldn't have come up with a more potent, magical mix than that of Phil Beer, who can, as The Scotsman observed, "play nearly every stringed instrument known to man" and the inspired Steve Knightley, described by Mike Harding at BBC Radio 2's 2007 Folk Awards as "one of England's greatest singer songwriters". 2007 was a milestone year for England's most popular roots duo - notching up a third sell out gig at the Royal Albert Hall; nominated for Best Duo and Best Original Song (for Roots) at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards; headlining at some 20 major UK festivals from Glastonbury to Cambridge and being invited to support Peter Gabriel at the Eden Project; embarking on solo tours and a German tour and then back home in the UK for two autumn/winter tours. There aren't many rock bands on this planet that wouldn't like to be regarded as unique. Of course, in these times of nostalgia and endlessly recycled ideas, very few actually deserve that description. Finland's Apocalyptica deserve it more than most. Utterly original in every respect, these classically-trained merchants of genre-shattering metal sound quite unlike anything or anyone else in musical history. (back to top)

THE KOOKS (Civic Hall)

Sunday 7th December 2008 - 7pm
Luke Pritchard (vocals/guitar), Hugh Harris (guitar), Max Rafferty (bass), and Paul Garred (drums) generate the rubbishy garage rock sounds of the Kooks. Obviously named for the song on David Bowie's Hunky Dory, the Kooks met while attending Brighton Music College in the mid-2000s. Each shared a liking for the Police, the Strokes, the Everly Brothers, and Funkadelic, thus forming the sweet and precocious sounds of the Kooks in 2005. Before the year's end, the British foursome was releasing singles for Virgin UK. "Eddie's Gun" and "Sofa Song" did moderately well on the U.K. singles chart; however, the romantic playfulness of "You Don't Love Me" eventually gave the band its first ever Top 20 hit. The Kooks' debut full-length, Inside In/Inside Out, arrived in January 2006. The band's fifth single, "Naive," landed at number five by spring. Hot on the heels of their international success, the Kooks made their American performance debut at the annual South by Southwest conference in Austin, TX, in March. The U.S. version of Inside In/Inside Out arrived on Astralwerks in October 2006. (back to top)

Sunday 7th December 2008 - 7pm

The 90s witnessed The Saw Doctors emerge as the most successful Irish rock band since U2. The Washington Post referred to the Saw Doctors as "one of the world's most appealing roots-rock outfits." The Saw Doctors had their initial success with their second single, I Useta Love Her, which became the biggest-selling single in Irish history and spent nine weeks at the top of the Irish charts. Following its success, the Saw Doctors' first single, N17, too became a number one hit. The Saw Doctors' debut album, If This Is Rock and Roll, I Want My Old Job Back, released in 1991, also reached the top slot on the Irish charts. Same Oul' Town, the Saw Doctors' third album, was released in 1996 and fared well reaching number six on the British charts. (back to top)

Tuesday 9th December 2008 - 7pm

Jason has been on the circuit for over five years. He is based in the Nothe West and despite being a whipper snapper has regularly performed at the country's top comedy clubs including 'The Comedy Store' and 'Jongleurs' as well as abroad. He started his comedy life as a lowly pot collector at Manchester's longest running comedy club, The Buzz. After an act didn't turn up one night, Jason offered to step in and went on to do a very promising set in front of a demanding audience. Then, after only five weeks and four gigs, he won the prestigious North West Comedian of the Year Award, previously won by Caroline Aherne, Johnny Vegas and Peter Kay. Jason has warm and natural stage presence, and his act is a friendly one. He is naturally funny and has a strong, original set with wry observations and a genuine respect for the old comedy greats. Jason is equally adept at compering, opening or closing shows, he also does many corporate gigs as well as TV warm-ups. (back to top)
