RUSSELL
BRAND (NIA
Academy) |
|
| Friday
23rd January & Thursday 26th February
2009 - 7.30pm |
| Having
wowed American audiences with an acclaimed
movie debut and a host of sold-out stand-up
dates, Russell Brand is poised for a triumphant
return to his homeland in 2009. Russell will
take a deserved break from writing, acting,
TV and radio to return to his first love -
stand up comedy. Almost 18 months since the
curtain fell on his acclaimed ‘Only
Joking' tour, the award-winning comic will
play a series of fourteen must-see dates in
2009. It's been a whirlwind twelve months
for Russell. His scene-stealing performance
in Judd Apatow's 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall'
drew widespread acclaim, enhancing the reputation
he earned with Britflicks 'Penelope' and 'St.
Trinians'. Russell recently completed filming
'Bedtime Stories' with Adam Sandler, and has
been cast in Judd Apatow's next feature, filming
in early 2009. Russell's stand up show has
also been taking North America by storm. An
appearance at Montreal's world-renowned comedy
festival followed sell-out dates at New York's
Grammercy Theatre and Los Angeles' Roxy. His
autobiography ‘My Booky Wook' topped
the UK best-seller list and sold in excess
600,000 hardback copies, going on to win a
prestigious ‘Nibby' at the British Book
Awards. (back

DYLAN
MORAN - WHAT IT IS (Alexandra
Theatre) |
|
| Saturday
14th February 2008 - 8pm |
| Dylan
Moran, star of Black Books, Shaun of the Dead
and Run Fat Boy Run, is back with a brand
new show, What It Is. Moran's legendary stand
up rants have sold out across the world cementing
this unkempt wordsmith's reputation as one
of the foremost comics of his generation.
Likened to Dave Allen and labelled ‘The
Oscar Wilde of Comedy', Dylan is unpredictable,
bizarre, elegiac, often cruel but above all
painfully funny. Moran sees through the joys
and disappointments of human existence with
the sensibility and intense perception of
a man teetering on the edge. He chews life
up and coughs it out.

JETHRO
2009 (Alexandra
Theatre) |
|
| Saturday
14th March 2009 - 7.30pm |
| Jethro
started in show business singing traditional
songs in Cornish pubs. At the age of 18, he
joined a local operatic society. But he discovered
he could get laughs, too, and so became a
comic. Although rarely seen on TV, he sells
more than 250,000 theatre seats a year and
does a roaring trade on video. His few small-screen
outings include The Des O'Connor Show, where
he appeared a record nine times, and five
appearances on Jim Davidson’s Generation
Game, twice to make a Cornish Pasty. He has
hosted two shows for West Country ITV station
HTV, The Jethro Junction, and in December
2001 appeared in the Royal Variety show in
front of the Queen. Jethro lives in Lewdown
on the Devon/Cornwall border. His passions
are his show horses, golf, and rugby, having
played prop-forward for Penzance and Newlyn
for ten years from 1967. In 1993 Jethro released
his first video A Portion of Jethro, which
sold nearly 150,000 copies, a success which
he has followed up with another nine titles.

BOEING-BOEING
(in
the Main House) |
|
| Monday
20th to Saturday 25th April 2009 - 7pm |
| When
Boeing-Boeing took off to a roar of laughter
in London’s West End in 2007, the Daily
Telegraph called it ‘the funniest show
in London’. Directed by Olivier Award-winner
Matthew Warchus, this hysterical production
has since taken Broadway by storm. Audiences
and critics have been unbuckling their seatbelts
and rolling in the aisles for this first-class
Tony Award-winning comedy (Best Revival 2008).
Bernard, a successful architect living in

three air-hostess fiancées. It’s
all a question of timetables and a reliable,
long-suffering housekeeper who reluctantly
plays the role of romantic air-traffic controller.
But when his long lost cousin Robert arrives,
things start to get turbulent! Schedules change,
flights are delayed and a new turbo-charged
Boeing aircraft is introduced: chaos ensures
in this whirl of mayhem and matchmaking. Starring
Martin Marquez (Hotel Babylon, Dirty Tricks,
EastEnders), Susie Blake (Coronation Street,
The Victoria Wood Show), John Marquez (Hotel
Babylon, EastEnders, Doc Martin), Sarah Jayne
Dunn (Hollyoaks, Drop Dead Gorgeous), Thaila
Zucchi (Skins, Love Soup) and Josephine Butler
(No Heroics, Sorted). Tuesday's & Friday's
performance at 7.30pm. Matinee performances

JIMMY
CARR - JOKE TECHNICIAN (Civic
Hall) |
|
| Saturday
6th June 2008 - 7.45pm |
Jimmy
Carr is not just a TV star. He’s won
awards, released chart-topping DVDs (there’s
a new one out this November), written a best-selling
book and broken box office records by performing
to over 500,000 people in the last three years.
He may be the hardest working man in comedy.
But perhaps he wouldn’t have to be if
he had a little bit more talent. This show
is exactly the same as last year’s except
every single word. It’s rude, crude
and offensive but those aren’t the only
reasons you’ll enjoy it. Not to be missed,
unless it’s not your kind of thing.
