| k d lang (Symphony Hall) | | | Friday 1st August 2008 - 7pm | | Many pass themselves off as "proper" singers, but lang is one of the few who can really, really sing. Glorious.' The Times echoed, ‘With the pop world suddenly in thrall to a bevy of young, female torch singers, here is a star who really knows the stylistic and emotional ropes of the genre.' k.d.'s latest album is the acclaimed bestseller, Watershed, which was released by Nonesuch Records in January and saw k.d. achieve some of the best chart success of her 25-year career, including her highest ever debut on the US Billboard chart at no.8. The album comprises 11 new songs written and produced by k.d., including the first single ‘I Dream Of Spring' and the forthcoming single ‘Coming Home'. It is the first album of newly written material from the four-time Grammy winner since 2000's Invincible Summer, and her first studio album since 2004's Canadian songbook, Hymns Of The 49th Parallel. It is also the first self-produced collection of her career. The Sunday Times Magazine called it a ‘masterpiece', and in a four-star review Q proclaimed it ‘The best thing she's done since 1992's Ingénue.' DIAMOND
LIL (Little
Civic) |
|
| Saturday
2nd August 2008 - 7.30pm |
| Bringing
back Classical Rock with some powerful hooks
and meaningful lyrics is the blossoming band
- Diamond Lil. The band were together for
2 years as an established quartet, playing
at Venues such as the Robin 2, Varsity etc.
in the local area but felt there was something
missing. They bought Adam + then Patrick into
the band in 2008 and now we have a band that
is to be reckoned with. Taking their influences
from a range of bands such as Guns n Roses,
Led Zeppelin, Blink 182, Angels & Airwaves,
Little Man Tate + InMe, they write music that
is not only meaningful but interesting and
different, yet still keeping the classic rock
sound to it. They're only in their teens,
and these five musicians are just starting
to take the area by storm, with this, their
first ever headline tour - the Halfway Home
Tour. (back

| Over
the past few years, the hip-hop game has watched
Juelz Santana become one of its brightest

finest MCs. Juelz has begun to let us in on
a little secret: the game's been missing something
vital, and he's got it. A certain cooler-than-thou

SHELBY
LYNNE (Symphony
Hall) |
|
| Wednesday
15th September 2008 - 8pm |
| Shelby
Lynne is an American country music singer,
songwriter and actress. She won a Grammy Award
in 2001 for Best New Artist. In 1998, Shelby
released the confessional and eclectic Rhythm
and Blues album I Am Shelby Lynne in 1999
(released in US in 2000) to wide critical
acclaim; on the strength of the album Lynne
won a Grammy award for "Best New Artist",
despite the fact that she had been recording
and releasing records for more than ten years
(which she referred to in her acceptance speech).
Her 2001 follow up album, Love, Shelby featured
a slicker, more pop-influenced sound. This
album was a moderate commercial success but
received mixed reviews. In 2003, Lynne released
the critically-acclaimed Identity Crisis.
Though not a commercial success, many magazines
rated the album among the best of 2003. 2005's
Suit Yourself has also been well received
by critics. Lynne's most recent album —
Just a Little Lovin', released on January
29, 2008 — is a tribute to singer Dusty
Springfield, which has garnered favourable
press as well. (back

NICKELBACK
(NEC
Arena) |
|
| Thursday
18th September 2008 - 7.30pm |
| Multi-million
selling Canadians Nickelback are set to return
to the UK for a string of arena shows this
Autumn. The band will play will play Birmingham’s
NEC Arena on Thursday 18 September 2008. The
band are currently riding a tsunami of radio
and video play for their current single, Rockstar.
The track has resided in the upper reaches
of the UK singles chart since December 2007
and is taken from their latest album, For
All The Right Reasons which has also shifted
a staggering 9 million copies to date globally.
Both releases currently sit at No.3 in the
respective UK singles and albums charts. Incredible
statistics are what Nickelback excel at. They
connect with people on a level far beyond
the ordinary and that is reflected in global

counting. They’ve bagged numerous awards
around the globe and just this week, their
Silver Side Up album broke the 1 million sales
barrier in the UK. To celebrate, the band

this September. Frontman Chad Kroeger is looking
forward to flying back over the pond, stating;
"We can’t wait to get to the UK
and give our fans the Nickelback show they
deserve!" Be sure to catch the band at
The NEC Arena, as it’ll be your last
chance to see them play before they close
ranks and return home to Canada. There they
will begin work on album number six, which
is pencilled for release in 2009 through Roadrunner
Records. (back

DUFF
MCKAGAN'S LOADED (Wulfrun
Hall) |
|
| Friday
19th September 2008 - 7pm |
Loaded
is a REAL band. Despite a rollercoaster
schedule with Velvet Revolver, Duff plays
with the band during his precious downtime.
No ego driven side-project of a megastar,
Loaded shoots from the hip with a working-class
swagger. Living across 3 states, hundreds
of miles apart, the band jumps at the chance
to play together, every time. Loaded embodies
the excitement of your first high school
band, raw and untainted by the spoils of
big success. A band that is right at home
playing in an arena, a theater, a club,
or a house party. They rock every room,
every time, just for the chance to play
together. Now is their time, excitement
and tension are high. When opportunity knocks,
the door gets kicked down.

NILE
(Wulfrun Hall) |
|
| Monday
22nd September 2008 - 7pm |
| Combining
the extreme speed and nihilism of modern death
metal with the ancient styling of Middle Eastern
music, Nile formed in their hometown of Greensberg,
SC, in 1993. With their self-proclaimed trademark
of "Ithyphallic Metal," Karl Sanders
(guitar/vocals), Chief Spires (bass/vocals),
and Pete Hammoura (drums) debuted with their
Festivals of Atonement album in 1995, leading
Nile to a southwestern tour in support of
other big metal acts such as Obituary, Deicide
and Broken Hope. Viscera Productions was responsible
for Nile's follow-up EP Ramses Bringer of
War in 1997 and was going to release their
second album Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka
— that is, if they hadn't gone out of
business later that year. However, Relapse
Records was more than happy to put it out
in early 1998, giving Nile a wider distribution
and a chance to hit the road with Incantation
and Morbid Angel. The follow-up, Black Seeds
of Vengeance, was released in late 2000. A
collection of remastered, hard to find recordings,
In the Beginning was released later the same
year. By 2002, the highly anticipated In Their
Darkened Shrines was dropped and the buzz
around it led to mainstream coverage the band
had never experienced before. (back

SAM
SPARRO (Wulfrun
Hall) |
|
| Thursday
25th September 2008 - 7pm |
There
aren't many artists able to elevate themselves
from the confines of musicianship and into
the consciousness of popular culture. There
are few that are as creatively talented
as they are musically, Sam Sparro is one
of the few. As inspired by Jeremy Scott
and Gareth Pugh as he is by SWV and Hot
Ch!p, the 25 year-old is utterly engaging.
Firstly there's the voice; a big and beautiful
scale defying vocal that dips from bold
and beautiful to low, sultry and slow. This
guy has serious soul. Sam has also more
than mastered the art of melody and knows
a killer chorus when he hears one. Just
listen to the sublime new single 'Black
and Gold' to see for yourself.
