THE
STEEL TOUR (Civic
Hall) |
|
| Thursday
11th December 2008 - 7pm |
| Tour
featuring some of the Steel City's greatest
pop exports. Formed in the late 1970s by Sheffield-based
computer programmers Ian Craig Marsh and Martyn
Ware, Human League evolved into one
of the seminal 80s electro pop bands. Fronted
by former hospital porter, Philip Oakey -
and featuring dancers Susan Ann Sulley and
Joanne Catherall - the band went on to record
some of the most influential songs of the
decade. ABC, the big-haired, cool and
suave '80s pop icons whose videos and songs
lived on long after the band had split. Their
debut album The Lexicon of Love' was a huge
hit in 1981and often features in UK critics'
lists of favourite albums; it ranked 42nd
in The Observer Music Monthly's "Top
100 British Albums" (June 2004). Now
reformed and back on the road with new material
as well as the classics. Heaven 17,
80s synth-pop heroes, once the instrumental
core of The Human League, who achieved considerable
chart success in their own right.

THE
UKULELE ORCHESTRA OF GREAT BRITAIN XMAS
SPECIAL (Town
Hall) |
|
| Thursday
11th December 2008 - 7.30pm |
| Fans
mob them in Japan. They've played at Ronnie
Scott's, the Royal Festival Hall and Glastonbury.
And now the Symphony Hall warmly welcomes
these funny, twanging, singing, awesome, foot-stomping
ukulele players. From its first sell-out gig
more than 20 years ago The Ukulele Orchestra
of Great Britain has shown audiences a good
time. Whatever your taste in music –
Tchaikovsky, Nirvana, Kate Bush, The Sex Pistols,
Otis Redding – there's something in
the line-up that'll get your toes tapping.
Their on-stage antics make for an informal
evening packed with laughs. But don't think
the orchestra is a spoof; each member is a
serious virtuosic player of the ukulele. Sit
back in the cabaret-style seating and let
this cult orchestra sing, strum and pluck
its way into the cockles of your heart, only
this time with a festive slant. (back

JAMES
(The
NIA) |
|
| Saturday
13th December 2008 - 7pm |
Few
bands can claim to have been instrumental
in 20 years of musical history. Well, James
are one of them. From their early EPs for
a youthful Factory records, through their
pivotal place in the '80s indie scene, the
early '90s Manc-centric baggy scene and
the mid '90s era of guitar bands breaking
the top 10 and playing arenas. Through all
this, James have been at the forefront of
British music. With a host of classic songs
including "Sit Down", "She's
a Star", "Come Home" and
"Laid", the band's place in UK
musical history is already assured. James
nonetheless remain a band that are hugely
popular with the public and can claim to
have influenced a whole host of artists
including Coldplay's Chris Martin as well
as touring companions The Smiths. The Smiths
recorded a version of the James' early single
"What's The World", the only contemporary
song covered by the band.
