JEWELS
(The Kirov Ballet) |
|
| Tuesday
20th & Wednesday 21st May 2008 - 7.30pm |
| The
Kirov Ballet from the Mariinsky Theatre in
St. Petersburg makes its debut at Birmingham
Hippodrome in 2008. The 200-year-old Russian
company, under the Artistic Direction of Valery
Gergiev and Ballet Director Makhar Vaziev,
will perform two full-length ballets as well
as a Gala Evening of balletic fireworks. George
Balanchine’s diverse three-act ballet
Jewels, a succession of classical divertissements,
is inspired by three precious stones: elegant
and romantic for Emeralds (set to music by
Fauré), hot and jazzy for Rubies (Stravinsky)
and glittering and aristocratic for Diamonds
(Tchaikovsky).

ALEXANDER
NEVSKY/CARBON 12 - A CHORAL SYMPHONY (Welsh
National Opera) |
|
| Thursday
19th June 2008 - 7.15pm |
| Alexander
Nevsky - Prokofiev's
dazzling orchestral and vocal score was
originally created as the score for the
wildly popular 1938 film by Eisenstein,
which plots the true story of 13th century
Russia - overrun by foreign invaders - through
one character, Alexander Nevsky, Grand Prince
of Novgorod. From recovery from Mongolian
invaders and songs of heroism, to marauding
armies of Teutonic knights, this astounding
work, brimming with proud patriotism, culminates
with a climactic, triumphant battle. Carbon
12 - A Choral Symphony - Composed
by Errollyn Wallen. Text by John Binias.
A celebration in music and song of South
Wales' unique history, its landscape and
its people. Carbon 12 - A Choral Symphony
celebrates the creation of South Wales and
the valleys - from their physical formation
300 millions years ago to the region's centrality
in industry internationally 100 years ago
- few places in the world have seen such
radical transformation and turmoil. Working
with the traditions of music and song, engendered
by this unique landscape and history, composer
Errollyn Wallen (winner of the British Composers/
BBC Radio 3 Listeners' Award 2005) brings
mass choirs, brass bands, and the Chorus
and Orchestra of Welsh National Opera together
to create an unforgettable musical re-telling
of South Wales' history. (back

HANSEL
& GRETEL (Welsh National
Opera) |
|
| Friday
20th June 2008 - 7.15pm |
| "How
are we to get out of the forest now?"
Dark, macabre
and wickedly funny, Welsh National Opera's
Olivier award-winning Hansel and Gretel
is a grown up exploration of this classic
fairytale. Hansel and Gretel's mother comes
home, exhausted and empty-handed, to find
her children insatiably ravenous. She snaps
and drives them out into the forest. Poor
Hansel and Gretel suffer throughout. They
are punished by the forest; punished for
not finding food; punished for taking food
from within the forest and terrorised by
the wicked Witch who threatens to cook them.
But at least she gets her just desserts...
This darkly beautiful production, with strange
and surreal characters is magical and mysterious.
This is your chance to see a truly theatrical
event which has already overwhelmed critics.
Approximate duration 2 hours 10 minutes.
Sung in English with surtitles. (back

GISELLE
(Birmingham Royal Ballet) |
|
| Wednesday
25th to Saturday 28th June 2008 |
| Lovestruck
Giselle has no idea her beloved peasant
suitor Loys is really Count Albrecht in
disguise. When the true identity of Loys
is revealed by Giselle's other suitor, the
jealous Hilarion, the betrayal drives Giselle
to madness and suicide. In sorrow and remorse,
Hilarion and Albrecht visit the site of
Giselle's unconsecrated grave. But they
are not alone, the Wilis, ghosts of girls
jilted by their lovers, also haunt the forest.
These spirits will dance to death any man
they meet during the hours of darkness.
Is Giselle's love strong enough to protect
her lover from beyond the grave? Still the
epitome of 19th-century romanticism, Giselle
broke new ground when it was first conceived
by the poet Théophile Gautier. This
surreal ballet fused the popular appeal
of historical local colour, with shadowy
spirits – to great tragic and dramatic
effect. Marius Petipa, Jean Coralli and
Jules Perrot, were the choreographic stars
of their time, and David Bintley and Galina
Samsova's 1999 production for BRB preserves
the best of their work. There are also afternoon
performances on the Thursday (2pm) and Saturday
(2.30pm). The performance on Saturday
at 7.30pm is SOLD OUT!!! (back
